A dog's life

I had the strangest dream the other night.

I received three dogs in the mail, from my mother. That's right, three dogs, sent through the mail. I immediately called her to find out what the deal was and she said she didn't want to take care of my pets anymore, so she sent them through Canada Post, international overnight delivery. She figured they would be alright wrapped up together for just one night. So there I was, unwrapping a brown paper wrapper to reveal two Miniature English Bulldogs and a Miniature Schnauzer, packed together like sausages.

Now understand:
1) I have never owned a dog on my own. Nobody I've know has ever owned a Miniature Bulldog. My brother and sister-in-law owned a great little Miniature Schnauzer, though.
2) Knowing my mother, it is not totally unfathomable that she might do this. (Well, maybe it is, but only by a small margin.)
3) Generous dimensions make my studio apartment only about 265 square feet. (285 s.f. if you include bathroom)
4) I already have a cat, Medley.

What's more, I couldn't figure out how thie thing might have possibly cleared customs.

Anyway, I had to nurse back to health three prepackaged small dogs, who were suffering from varying degrees of dehydration and shock. Once they were somewhat responsive and became coherent, they were actually all pretty cute. However, the whole event was a recipe for disaster, as after some time they realised they were all dogs sharing the same small room with Medley, and chaos ensued. I put Medley in the bathroom, but there was still much barking and meowing/hissing going on.

The whole situation stressed me out. I didn't want dogs, didn't have time to take care dogs, and had no room for dogs. If I were going to own a dog at this time in my life, I'd envision having a Border Collie or some other breed that I could at least go running with, and not three little things whose little legs would have much difficulty doing the six-mile loop in Central Park at a 7:30 pace.

So when calling and e-mailing friends to see if they knew anyone who wanted a dog failed, I did the most pathetic thing of all. I called NYC animal control (I assumed such an organization exists) and told them that someone had abandoned their dogs outside my building. I awoke from the dream before they came by to get them.

Somewhere in this dream is a theme, or a series of themes. I wondered if it has to do with family ties, and how they affect my relationships and reponsibilities now. Or something.

I don't know. All I know is it was a really bizarre dream.
