Random Crap

Tagged. Again, I really dislike these things. However, I respect the fact that most people don't know this and I have therefore decided on a new rule: I'll respond to anyone's tag - once. So, if you've ever tagged me, you're done. You know who you are, and so do I. However, I still won't pass along the chain letter.

Well, Chelly tagged me to list 8 random things about myself. I'm not sure how this is any different than the listing of 6 weird things about myself that I got tagged with last week (and have since taken down that post because, as I've already said, I don't like these things). No offense, Chell.

Anyway, here's the list. Keep in mind that these things are merely random, and not necessarily meant to be weird or interesting in any sort of way.

1. I'm 6'1" tall.
2. I can't cook, and have no desire to learn. I do, however, wish that I had a desire to learn.
3. I grew up on a farm (with pigs, cattle, chickens, goats, geese, rabbits, a dog, cats, and grains).
4. I was in the military. Naval Reserves.
5. I am a middle child, and have two brothers.
6. I wear size 12 shoes.
7. My favourite season is Summer.
8. I've had my own solo exhibition of photography, while in grad school in 1998.

Since this list seems pretty innocuous, I might even leave it up.

My Horrorscope

I find horoscopes entertaining. I read mine once a month on astrologyzone, just for the fun of it. I know they're all bunk, but usually they're pretty positive, so they can serve as kind of a pick-me-up, too.

Normally I check the site at the start of the month, read mine, and then wait till next month. But a colleague was reading hers today and I figured I'd look at mine again. I'd say that there was nothing extraordinary, but actually there was:

Things will continue to build for you and your very best period due in November's third week. The new moon that falls on November 20 could change your life for months, years, or even forever.

Wow. Happy Thanksgiving! But wait, it gets better still:

The most remarkable point about this new moon on November 20 is that just one day later the "luckiest day of the year" is due to arrive, November 21.

Wait, isn't that today? Why, yes it is. So here I am, sitting at my computer figuring out the grading of a synthetic turf soccer/baseball field in the Bronx, and this is as good as it gets? Sheesh!

Of course, it would have to be a Tuesday. Why not salary review day? I guess I can look forward to a good run with my British friend tonight, but can't there be something else? Why can't it be a race day? Maybe I could set a good PR. Maybe I'd win! (It did say "luckiest day of the year," right?) Oh well, there's always next year, isn't there?

Apparently not. All this awesomeness is supposedly due to some sort of orgasmic commingling between the Sun and Jupiter. . . and:

The last meeting similar to this one happened on November 17, 1994. The next pairing of Jupiter to the Sun in Scorpio is due October 26, 2017.

Yes, folks, I am officially on a downward spiral for the next 11 years. Nice.

At least that explains most of my mid-twenties to mid-thirties, though.

So what would you do, knowing that you're going to spend the next decade at a mediocre level? I think I'll cancel tonight's run, and sit around the apartment in my underwear eating junk food.

Mental note: buy ice cream on the way home. That is, right after picking up a few dozen lottery tickets.

I sound terrible, and now I've proven it.

So I came across this quiz on Chelly's blog, which asks "What American accent do you have?"

I thought, being Canadian, it would be funny to do this test. What American accent would it tell me I had? Since I'm from Manitoba, which is just north of North Dakota and Minnesota, would it tell me I had a Midwestern accent? Or would it peg me for something completely different? I took the test and answered honestly and instinctively.

Normally I think tests like these are pretty much just all hooey. But it did pin her down as a Southern Girl, and needless to say, I was more than a little dumbfounded to see my results...

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: North Central

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

The West
Boston
The Midland
The Inland North
The Northeast
Philadelphia
The South

And for the record, I know I have the accent, and if you've seen the movie Fargo, you'll probably agree that it's just an atrocious accent!
